There aren’t enough words to adequately describe how great Dr Ben Goldacre’s “Bad Science” is for anyone interested in learning about pseudoscience, alternative therapies and generally bad science that have successfully pulled the wool over so many eyes – not too mention money out of peoples bank account.
Written in a witty and informative way for scientists and non scientists alike “Bad Science” is an essential read for doctors, professionals and especially for individuals who maybe thinking of engaging in alternative therapies – preferably before they part with their money on treatments that are nothing more than placebos and magical thinking. A great example of an accessible easy-to-read reference guide for those looking to expand their knowledge about critical thinking and safe guard themselves against the pseudoscience industry.
While it is quite upsetting the number of physicians who promote alternative therapies without looking into the science around them especially seeing as physicians have a level of authority in society – equally alarming is the number of physicians who haven’t been trained as scientists and critical thinkers.
Bad Science explores such treatments as the placebo effect homeopathy, acupuncture, the MMR Hoax and quacks pseudosciences such as Gillian McKeith and a behind the scenes look at the theater behind alternative therapies.
And if, by the end [of this book], you reckon you might still disagree with me, then I offer you this: you’ll still be wrong, but you’ll be wrong with a lot more panache and flair than you could possibly manage right now. – Bad Science.
